Another exciting title to be published by Duke University Press in 2023 that we have recently indexed at Southwest Humanities is Piro Rexhepi’s White Enclosures: Racial Capitalism and Coloniality along the Balkan Route. Analyzing “the perception of the Balkans as colorblind and raceless, a project that spans post-Ottoman racial formations, transverses Socialist modernity and is negotiated anew in the process of postsocialist Euro-Atlantic integration,” Rexhepi instead frames the Balkans through the lenses of race and coloniality. White Enclosures engages with topics such as “the sexualities of post-Ottoman Muslim subjects,” “Yugoslav nonaligned solidarities between Muslims of the second and third world,” the displacement of Roma communities, and the increased application of carceral logics and technologies on Balkan Route refugees. In Rexhepi’s thorough-going study of these and other topics, he “points not only to the epistemic erasures that maintain the fantasy of whiteness but also to the disruption emanating from the solidarities between queer- and transpeople that fold the Balkans back into global efforts to resist the politics of racial capitalism.” Please take a look at the publisher’s website here for more information.
