To be published in Fall 2023, Caterina Fugazzola’s forthcoming book Words like Water: Queer Mobilization and Social Change in China (Temple University Press) is one of the latest books we have indexed at Southwest Humanities. Fugazzola’s book focuses on the opportunities for political and civil rights advocacy for tongzhi, “an inclusive identity term that refers to nonheterosexual and gender nonconforming identities in the People’s Republic of China,” under the authoritarian regime of Xi Jinping. In such a political environment, some of the most accessible and successful strategies for social change have taken non-confrontational forms, and this is precisely what Fugazzola examines here. “Providing on-the-ground stories that examine the social, cultural, and political constraints and opportunities, Words like Water emphasizes the value of discursive flexibility that allows activists to adapt to changing social and political conditions.” For more information about this exciting title, please take a look at the publisher’s website here.
