Southwest Humanities continues to provide the most high-quality academic book indexes, and the most recent to be published is Petra R. Rivera-Rideau’s Fitness Fiesta!: Selling Latinx Culture through Zumba (Duke University Press, 2024). This excellent and illuminating study of the Zumba fitness system’s impact on notions of Latinidad in the US through its use and promotion of Latin music. “Closely examining videos, ads, memes, and press coverage as well as interviews she conducted with instructors, Rivera-Rideau traces how Zumba Fitness constructs its ideas of Latinx culture,” showing “how Zumba Fitness claims to celebrate Latinx culture and diversity while it simultaneously traffics in the same racial and ethnic stereotypes that are used to justify racist and xenophobic policies targeting Latinx communities in the United States.” Rivera-Rideau is thereby able to illustrate the contemporary construction of Latinx culture and identity vis-à-vis the political culture of the neoliberal “post-racial” United States. Fitness Fiesta! is scheduled to be released on 27 September 2024. For more information about this exciting new title, please see the publisher’s website here.
