Jacques Lezra’s newly published Defective Institutions: A Protocol for the Republic (Fordham University Press, 2024), is the third book of his triptych (which includes Wild Materialism: The Ethic of Terror and the Modern Republic [Fordham UP, 2010] and On the Nature of Marx’s Things: Translation as Necrophilology [Fordham UP 2018]), and it is one of the most recent books that has been indexed by Southwest Humanities. This final volume of Lezra’s triptych offers a penetrating critique of institutionalism and a rousing exploration of abolitionism. “Working at the point of contact and conflict between socialist and anarcho-philosophical traditions, Defective Institutions offers an alternative to neoliberal unfreedom and racialized violence, which is also an alternative to the figures of governance associated with the liberal conception of the state: an aberrant republicanism comprised of defective institutions, run through with the necessity of their abolition.” Lezra’s excellent work was scheduled to be published in early March 2024 but was released a few weeks early, in February.
