Maylei Blackwell’s forthcoming Scales of Resistance: Indigenous Women’s Transborder Activism (Duke University Press, 2023) is an extensive and vital study of Indigenous migration and cross-border organizing is one of the most recent books we have indexed at Southwest Humanities. Based on over two decades of fieldwork with Indigenous women involved in migrant organizing, “Blackwell focuses on how these activists navigate the blockages to their participation and transform exclusionary spaces into scales of resistance” and demonstrates how both activists and migrants “redefined women’s roles in community decision-making.” Scales of Resistance also discusses the colonial and Indigenous understandings of “scale, space, solidarity, and connection,” as well as the importance of navigating different types of scales in order to transform power into resistance.
