Ana R. Alonso-Minutti, Mario Lavista: Mirrors of Sounds (Oxford University Press, 2023)

It is truly a great honor for Southwest Humanities to have copy-edited the manuscript, assisted with Spanish-to-English translation, and compiled the index for Ana R. Alonso-Minutti’s forthcoming Mario Lavista: Mirrors of Sounds (Oxford University Press, 2023), the first book-length study of the Mexican new music composer. In this book, Alonso-Minutti uses an intertextual approach to explore the career and life of Lavista, a “composer, pianist, editor, writer, and pedagogue” who “was a central figure of the cultural and artistic scene in Mexico and one of the leading Ibero-American composers of his generation.” Drawing on archival work, musical analysis and theory, oral history, and intertextual analysis, Alonso-Minutti “offers a nuanced, personal narrative informed by conversations with composers, performers, artists, choreographers, poets, writers, and filmmakers,” as well as a panoramic view of Mexican musical and cultural practices over the last fifty years.
