To be published in March 2023, Amanda Lock Swarr’s forthcoming book Envisioning African Intersex: Challenging Colonial and Racist Legacies in South African Medicine is the nineteenth Duke University Press title we have indexed at Southwest Humanities in 2022. Swarr’s careful and systematic research and analysis is applied here to debunking the notion that intersex and “hermaphroditism” are disproportionately present among Black South Africans. “Tracing the history of racialized research that underpins medical and scientific premises of gendered bodies, Swarr analyzes decolonial actions by intersex South Africans from the 1990s to the present,” dismantling colonial understandings of gender and sex.
